it’s very late. or very early.

So, its 7:11am. I am running on Rockstar, coffee, regular Lays, mp3s, fluorescent lighting and the support of my fellow all-nighter commandos. I have a headache, my right eye is doing that twitchy thing that it does when I’m tired and this coffee tastes like what I suppose cigarettes taste like. Sounds unhealthy, but thats okay…the work needs to get done.

Sleep would be nice.

So yes, the title has nothing to do with this post, but you made it this far, so you might as well finish.

It’s true; when the Nintendo DS came out, I laughed at it like so many kids who fell off the monkey bars. I mean, a stylus? 2 screens? Really, what were they thinking? This was going to bomb in the same way as the Virtual Boy and fade into history like the Panasonic 3DO. Seriously though, a stylus? I want to shoot things with button presses, not delicate swipes of my fake-pen. But, this was a few years back. So over the years, I’ve seen a tonne of people with the DS, and it intrigued me; there has to be something to this Dual-Screen-Thingy. So after the PSP failed me, and needing something to pass the time on the long bus rides to school, I decided to give the DS a try. I unwrapped it a little less ceremoniously than I did my PSP or the sandwiches I made the night before, plugged in the charger, glanced at the instruction manual, popped in a game, whipped out the stylus and played until my hand hurt and my brain asked for sleep.

It was (is) awesome.

Everything about it is just so welcoming and more importantly, FUN. So where am I going with all this? Design. The original DS wasn’t so fantastic; the physical shape and bulkiness and the sharp buttons. But the DS Lite is great. And although the games are 90% of what the DS is about, it goes beyond that. The software interface is easy and inviting, and the physical interface is as pleasant to use. I mean, really, a stylus? What a great idea! And the Dual Screens? Equally great.

It’s also true that I thought the Wii was a risky jump too, but now its all I can do to keep from buying one.

it begins

I’ve been waiting for school to start for the longest time. At some points, it seemed like it would never happen or that the world would simply explode the day before orientation. But, I’m knee deep in term 1 and I’m already learning…a lot (see blinking text below). During the course of my design career, I’ll be honest, I completely thought I knew what I was doing…I was wrong. Not so wrong that I was producing crap, but wrong enough not to be producing better crap. But, that’s why I’m here. To develop my creativity to a level that actually produces results and establish a better and more efficient process and work flow.

I had coffee with a friend today and she made a good point. ‘Without the idea, there is no reason for the execution’. The ‘idea’ has always been a struggle for me; so here’s to changing that.

oh yeah, thanks brett, this is awesome!
